Sri McKinnon is a great illustrator, jewellery maker, art worker, music lover and promoter. She has had shows all over London, runs art work shops, make wicked earings, and has one of the finest uprocks on E3. I came across Sri’s work through the exhibition she had last year; a show called MindScapes in collaboration with Put Me On It. A year on I can call Sri a friend, her work never ceases to amaze me. Her music selection is another thing that blows me away so, I asked Sri to do a Three of a Kind for me and here are the results… Sri says: Push Me Pull You (70s stylee)The voices are incredible, the bass lines funky. Mister Feed Me Weird Things Alan: The Praise editions Feed me weird things is one of my favourite Mixcloud cloudcasts,  it hosts the podcast of a show out of Galway of the same name. I found Alan and his weekly musical journey when I was searching for some disco, I love me some disco you see, and Google(does Bing even exist anymore???) lead me to this disco special podcast from May 2010. I was HOOKED, I played it on repeat for a day then again the next day. It’s opener is a doozy, Arnie Love and the Loveletts - Invisible Wind, wicked tune. Anyway I started listening to the old podcasts as well as the new shows as they were uploaded. I enjoyed the images he used for the podcasts almost as much as the music and we started chatting on the tinterweb. Today I present to you the Feed Me Weird Things Three of a Kind, not all that weird though![[MORE]] I was lying in bed listening to my headphones the other day and I stuck on one of my favourite songs - Camille Yarbrough’s ‘Take Yo’ Praise’. Yes, it’s the one that was sampled by Fatboy Slim, but the original is even better. So funky and pure. ‘Praise You’ - Fatboy Slim. This is one of those songs that I can hear so many times and it still puts a smile on my face. It always makes me want to dance as well. Norman Cook shows his skill in manipulating samples to make something new. And the video is great too. I met Desta when she moved to London from Manila, we’d had a few months of online chatting, after I’d come across her music via the homie Gabriel Teodros. We hit it off through our shared love of Joe Bataan and interest in finding people out in the world that we could identify with as well as our love for Mosob, the best Eritrean restaurant in the WORLD. I asked Desta to to a guest Three of a Kind and the result is a Brazilian affair. Quite coincidentally that Gilles Peterson played a few Brazilian tracks in his show today 15/09/2012 - though not totally surprising…? Over to Desta….[[MORE]] I lived in Rio de Janeiro for a year. The language, the people, the beaches, the forests, the music, the vibe, the food, the caipirinhas…it’s an incredible culture, an amazing city. It was the first time in my life people thought I was a local, which was pretty cool! I felt like an honorary carioca. A Yorkshire Habesha Carioca… a Yobeshioca? I’m crazy about the music… Elis Regina, Naná Vasconcelos, Seu Jorge, Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, Djavan, Chico Buarque, Banda Black Rio, Vinicius de Moraes, Quarteto Em Cy, Tim Maia, Ed Motta, Cibelle, Maria Bethania, Marcelo D2, Zé Pagodinho, Casuarina, Jorge Ben Jor (who is a bonafide habesha-brazilian! i just found that out last week)…I could go on and on. Living there was magic. Choosing a favourite artist would be impossible..although I think Tim Maia’s ‘Bom Senso’ could be my all time favourite song! Hmm which song would I cover…? that’s a tough question…maybe Naná Vasconcelos’ ‘Fim de Festa’ or Seu Jorge & Ana Carolina’s ‘Tanta Saudade’… These three artists— Flora Matos, Criolo & Emicida— I discovered three months ago through friends as well as attending the Back to Black Festival (which was great!). They’re Three of a kind because 1- they’re all Brazilian, 2- they all make hip hop mainly, and 3- I just discovered them recently. So Black Classical. I have heard him referred to as an enigma but to me he is my portal to all things good music, be it Jazz and Spoken word or Techno. I first came across him on a blog called Restricted Zone and listening to this mix. Though I am not sure what first lead me to this blog…. Through more internet searching I came across his fine selections again on mixcloud, namely on that of Orsii’s couldcast, who had started running with my running group around the time  of aforementioned ‘research’ so it was ever so serendipitous that this music I was listening to was pulled together by real people, as in corporeal to me (I know everyone, or most people, on the net are REAL, but you know what I mean!) I listened to those mixes, tracked down Black Classical’s out couldcast and didnt look back.  A few weeks ago I heard the Red Hook Summer mix he did, found him on the old twitter and asked him if he would do a Three of a Kind selection for my blog and lo and behold he did! ————— Mister BC says: “All three are dingwalls classics from the 80’s which is really obvious but the real connection is Sabu Martinez. Seeing as we’re writing this post on a Friday we’ve all got the weekend on our brains and most of us love to let our hair down (READ ‘afros out’).

Three of a Kind #21 - ‘Ghetto Contemplation’ Edition with Mez

Thursday comes to you with some musical “introspection” from the indomitable Mez from the Nickel Bags of Funk Radio Show outta Hell( I mean Hull!). Mez has a music collection that I would love to have in my house and he has a facility for language and thought that I am enthralled and scared by in equal measure.
